Puzzles for babies

I found this super cute puzzle at ToysRUs on Sun. It’s handcrafted by Melissa & Doug. They’ve got so many varieties on Amazon but only a few at ToysRUs.

Since Sophie started to be able to put the balls into the hole, I figured that she’ll be able to work on simple puzzles soon. Who can resist this one!?!? So cute!!!! The knobs are so handy for little hands. I’ve been looking around for these but this is the best I’ve seen so far. The knobs are large enough, the wood can last the chewing, gnawing and knocking, the pictures are awesome. She can’t really get the concept yet but she loves the animals. I use them to sing Old Macdonald to her now. Hee…

I was surprised to find out that these puzzles don’t come cheap. I saw some places selling similar ones at $20. This one was about $14 i think.

Btw, ours is a sheep not a pig but the horse and cow are the same. Wonder why. Oh wells.

Of course they are expensive! They are made of wood after all. You should really spend some time scouring the garage sales by some of the expat communities here. They normally have very good quality toys at very cheap prices and normally good condition. There is no reason to spend so much on a toy which they will soon get tired of (the exception is Lego of course and my teenage daughters still fight with the sister for them) very soon. Try it once and you will be hooked. I guarantee it!!

hey nyet, i’ve been looking out for the garage sales leh but can’t find any. DO you look in the papers? I tried looking at the cold storage postings and sometimes at the tanglin mall baby clinic postings but don’t have those i want leh. Oh… but i’m not very comfy with wooden toys second hand coz saliva gets in n hard to wash out. Plastic ones ok i think. OH>>.. i’ve been looking at a lego set – the quartro i think it’s called. For toddlers. Very cute…

There are a few places you can look. Wake up early on Sat mornings to read through the listing on classifieds #158. Sat has got the most listings but Fridays are good too cos sometimes they advertise earlier. This means getting up real early cos usually the sales starts at 9am and if you go late, all the stuff are sold out. The other places to look is at Cold Storage notice boards. I find the one at Jelita the best. Only problem is you have to look often cos what you are looking for may not be available. I find the year end spring cleaning time quite good for such sales. I used to go often when the girls were young but haven’t been for a long time. Bought furniture frm garage sales before. Quite fun only thing is KC is not the type to wake up early and drive you there. Used to go with a girlfriend who is also garage sale crazy. Wooden toys are actually not very good for children although they are very durable. There are a lot of poorly made ones and the paints come off, and may get splinters ….

Luke has a wooden animal one with knobs too and that makes the animal sounds when you fit the right jigsaw in. Only thing is that it gets irritaing after a while the animal sounds ,especially when a jigsaw piece goes missing and you have to hunt high n low to find it in order to stop the mooing !

haha that’s the thing about these toys with sounds! Esp those without volume control! Wah….
