Sophie is 18 mths old today!

Dearest Sophie,

You’ve been having the time of your life (all 1 and a half of it)! We are so glad that you are always so happy, always eager to learn and so full of life.

Things You Started Doing

1. Counting! From 1 – 10 on your own! Mummy was so surprised! (er… but you’ve only done it a few times but you won’t do it on demand)

2. Spelling your own name – SOPHIE! You used to just say the letters randomly when I spell your name – P, H, I, E but recently you can go OPHIE when I start off with S. And yes, you also won’t do this on demand. But it’s a great effort darling!

3. Singing! Recently you started to hum along to some tunes and also sing (actually you shout) the last words of the song with the CD. Very cute!

4. Babbling! Yes, so funny, you started babbling to yourself and we can’t understand a thing you’re saying. Super funny. I think you’re trying to speak in sentences like us.

5. Learning Chinese words! Mummy started you on some Chinese flash cards coz I got a bit worried when instead of saying "xing xing" (stars), you say "shang shang" with an ang mo accent! It was super funny but finally after a week of the flash cards, you say "xing xing" but every other word still sound strangely ang mo when you recite it. We’ll keep trying!

6. Fixing puzzles! You finally got it! I really don’t know how it happened but suddenly, you can fix your puzzles – the ones with different shapes and the one with different insects. Sometimes you can’t get them in but you know which ones go where. Cool!

7. Sorting shapes! Together with puzzles you also figured out your shape sorters and even say the names of the shapes as you sort them – circle, square, heart, star, diamond – ok that’s all you know at this point. Cool!

Funny thing is that you’ve toned down on your tantrums and also started eating again! I realised it was because you were growing your molars. Now you have 10 teeth. Woohoo!

Things You Enjoy At 1 1/2 Years Old

Being Bob the builder – you have this fascination for putting nails into the holes and checking out how things work e.g wheels of the stroller etc… so Ye ye bought you this fantastic tool set. It’s right next to your cooking set in your playyard.

Scribbling – you’ll go to your Art & Craft cupboard and say "Draw!" and we’ll get all your washable crayons, markers etc out for you to draw. Daddy bought you a whiteboard and Mummy thinks it’s great coz we save tons of paper.

Dressing up – you love pretty dresses and shoes. When you have a nice dress on, you’ll go to the mirror and say "Nice!" or "Lang lang" (pretty in Cantonese). Oooo and you love shopping. You can pick out the nice clothes and shoes when I present you with choices. How clever! Girlfriend! :) Oooo and you like to try on our clothes and even Daddy’s army boots!

It’s been really fun hanging out with you and watching you learn and grow. You are really so blessed – don’t forget that. On Sunday, Grandma got you a toy and Mummy got you one too and then Grandpa also wanted to get one. You are SO surrounded by people who love you and want to be near you. Our dear Lord has been watching over you too. We thank God that your eyes are ok and also thank God for watching over you when your hand got stuck in the liftdoor. You are completely fine because angels are watching over you. We pray that you will grow up and also love and serve the people around you like you are so loved.

Love,

Mummy
