Dearest Sophie,
You are almost one and a half! Wow, time really flies.
This month, you entered into a few firsts. You threw your first real tantrum (YA! the back arching, throw the head back, complete with screaming type of tantrum!). I’m really glad that pregnancy has made me super forgetful because I totally forgot what that first tantrum was all about! Sigh… apparently it’s just going to get worse, not the forgetfulness, the tantrums but maybe it’s both to keep mummy me sane. I was starting to think I’m going to keep you home until you turn 21 so that you don’t go taking shoes off the racks while we are shopping and screaming when we have to leave the shop.
You are starting to regularly string two words together such as “Hi Mummy!” or “Mummy, thanks!”. You even did a three word once – “Mummy, nana (banana), pls!” You actually make a lot of sense these days when you speak which is super cool! It’s funny tho how you can say two different words together but not most two syllabus words. You put a “ah” as the first syllabus of every two syllabus word e.g “amished” (finished) when the show is over/food is gone. You can call almost everyone, including your friends – mummy, daddy, uncle, auntie, grandma, grandpa, mama, yeye, yiyi, evan, max, dernen! (you say it exactly as it shd be!), karen, popo (you call all the old aunties popo), godma, godpa, etc.

If you want to watch something, you’ll climb into your bumbo seat and call out which show you want to watch – blues clues, elmo, max (New Macdonald Farm) caillou. When you want a snack, you’ll climb into your bamboo chair in the kitchen and start naming all the foods you know – nana, iscuit (Biscuit), asins (raisins), grapes, milk, bread, cheese, hoping that I’ll give you something. Super funny.
My heart melted the first time you said “Mummy, thanks!” on your own accord when you handed your milk bottle back to me before bedtime. Awwww…. I felt so appreciated. You also hugged me on your own accord recently.
You are super entertaining. You can act these things out on command (ok, not always): – cry, yawn, laugh, smile, burp (!), sneeze, cough. It was super helpful over Chinese New Year. We’ve saved the ang pow money for you. Maybe you can use that for your acting classes next time.
You like animals more than I do. You go around petting dogs and cats recently. Looks like I gotta work on overcoming my fear of animals so that you can enjoy animals.
You are walking steadily these days and prefer to walk than carried. Your favourite place is the playground. You’ll walk, crawl, climb all over. It’s fantastic that we have more than 5 different playgrounds within walking distance. People pub crawl, we playground crawl. In fact we did 4 in two hours yesterday morning!

Playtime – you’ve not been very keen on your own toys and you would rather play with other people’s toys. Most times, you prefer to cling to me, read or go out. The things you like to play with are two clothes peg pegged on a string, empty juice bottles, contact lens case… ya strange things like that.
Mealtime – you generally like eating but I can see you are getting fussier and eating way less than before. You like to eat peas, long beans, chicken wings, rice, most fruits, hard boiled eggs, bread, yogurt, pasta, bao. One thing you’ll never reject is RAISINS! The other things you really like are SOUP and MILK. You also prefer pasta to noodles, rice to porridge, fruits to veggies, chicken to other meats. You’ve started drinking from a cup without spilling (with little water) and handing me your dishes after you’re done instead of throwing them on the floor! When we are out, you’ll eat whatever we eat but you pick at your food, choosing what you like and throwing out what you do not like.

What’s your fav? Bao!
Sleeptime – I’ve been messing around with your schedule and finally got you to sleep once a day at noon instead of twice so we’ve got a lot more play time. In the mornings, we’ll visit our neighbours, go out with our friends to the park or go to the playground and after your nap, most times we stay home or we’ll go out with Daddy to run errands. Most days you’ll be exhausted by 7pm and have no problems going to bed. However, that means you’re up early at 7ish again.
This is a long post coz you’re just growing up so fast and there’s so much to say! It’s so hard to document everything. This is a real exciting period, testing but exciting. We love you so much!
Love
Mummy
